Donald Trump visibly annoyed by question over incendiary Brexit comments

After his comments overnight about his British government hosts, you wouldn’t think Donald Trump would be the one to take offence.

But the US President seemed to be visibly annoyed when he was asked by a reporter if he regretted making remarks about British Prime Minister Theresa May and her Brexit policy in an explosive interview.

Mr Trump shook his head, pointed his finger and looked down at his shoes after being he asked if he regrets what he has said while sitting alongside Theresa May and posing for photographs at Chequers, the official residence of the PM.

In the incendiary interview, with the Sun newspaper, the US leader criticised Mrs May’s handling of Brexit negotiations, hailed Boris Johnson – who quit the cabinet earlier this week – as a future and ‘great Prime Minister’ and said there was too much immigration in Europe.

On Brexit, he said: ‘I would have done it much differently.

‘I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route.’

He added that he would like to meet Mr Johnson while in the UK.

President Trump also attacked the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, as protests took place in the capital and permission was given for a ‘Trump baby’ blimp to be flown.

After the question was posed to the US president, the reporter appeared to be ushered out of the room at Chequers, the official residence of the PM.

It was unclear if that was because of the question or because access to the media at that moment was limited to photographers and and cameramen and women.

Mr Trump is due to face a press conference later in the day.

He is on the second day of a controversial visit to the UK, made even more tense by his comments overnight.

After arriving on Thursday, he was given an official reception at Blenheim Palace.

He is due to meet the Queen later today at Windsor Castle before flying to Scotland, where he will play golf at one of the courses he owns, in Turnberry.

That part of the trip is considered private.

He will not visit London during his visit.
