Donald Trump Jr, the president’s eldest son, has shared an image of himself posing in front of an enormous banner reading “Don Jr 2024”, describing it as a sight to “make lib (liberal) heads explode”.

While he has not been actively involved in the Trump administration like his sister Ivanka, Don Jr has played a leading role in his father’s re-election campaign, and is being talked about in some Republican circles as the most likely political successor to Trump senior within the family.

The image shared on Instagram by Don Jr has received more than 286,000 likes since it was posted at the weekend.

"Hahahahaha. Oh boy," Mr Trump captioned it on Instagram. "This was a sign I saw up at the Fallon Nevada Livestock Auction. This will make the lib heads explode,” he wrote, adding, “To whomever made that thanks for the compliment … but let’s get through 2020 with a big win first!!!!!”

Mr Trump has been campaigning for his father in Nevada, with the state regarded as a potential target despite not backing a Republican candidate in the popular vote since 2008. It voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and Joe Biden is currently leading it in opinion polls.

Reacting to Mr Trump’s Instagram post, country musician Ryan Weaver wrote: “I'd vote for you. Would love to see you trounce any opponent in a debate. Would be prime time entertainment!”

It isn’t the first time Mr Trump has suggested a possible bid for the highest political office of the United States. In an interview with Bloomberg Radio in March 2019, he said that he “definitely” enjoys the fight of running for election.

“I definitely like being out there and I love being able to see the impact and the difference that it makes on these people’s lives that I get to see all over the country,” he said.

“Don Jr represents the emotional center of the MAGA universe,” Jason Miller, a senior adviser on Donald Trump’s campaign, told the New York Times, using an acronym for “Make America Great Again”, a Trump slogan.

Don Jr has also received praise from the likes of Brian Kilmeade, a co-host of the Fox News morning show Fox & Friends, who had said after interviewing the first son in February last year that he would have a “great political future” if he were ever to run for office.

Chris Cillizza, CNN’s editor at large, wrote in June that “of the two offspring (Don Jr and Ivanka), Don Jr looks like the more ready to run; he has made a number of comments over the last few years about his interest in political office”.

Meanwhile Eric Trump, the second-eldest son of the president and the family member most directly involved in running the Trump Organisation during Donald Sr’s time in the White House, has himself hinted at a future in politics.

Eric Trump also spoke at the Republican National Convention, and has been campaigning ahead of 3 November. On Saturday, he liked a tweet reading “Eric Trump 2024”.
