Donald Trump lashes out at 'treasonous' officials after ex-acting FBI chief Andrew McCabe's explosive claims

Donald Trump has lashed out after ex-acting FBI chief Andrew McCabe said in an explosive interview that there had been official discussions to have him removed as president.

Mr Trump accused Mr McCabe of “so many lies” and said he had a “lot of explaining to do to the millions of people who had just elected a president who they really like”.

He added on Twitter: “This was the illegal and treasonous ‘insurance policy’ in full action!”

Mr McCabe was fired last March.

He appeared in an interview with CBS News on Friday in which he revealed that there had been discussions about whether Mr Trump could be removed from office under the 25th amendment.

He claims that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein raised the possibility of invoking the 25th amendment.

Under section four of the amendment, a president can be removed by the vice president and cabinet members should they discover that the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” Time reports.

However Mr McCabe’s spokesman released a statement saying some of his comments had been taken “out of context and misrepresented”.

Last Thursday Mike Pence told MSNBC that suggestions that the amendment could be used to remove Trump were “absurd”.

He said: “I’ve never heard any discussion of the 25th amendment by members of the government and I would never expect to.”

Mr McCabe was fired last March as FBI deputy director a day before he was due to retire.

He had spent more than 20 years as a career FBI official however he was repeatedly condemned by Mr Trump who claimed that the FBI leadership was biased against his administration.

Following James Comey's firing, Mr McCabe ordered investigations into whether it was done to interfere with the investigation into Russian influence in the elections.

Mr McCabe came under particular scrutiny over an October 2016 news report that revealed differing approaches within the FBI and Justice Department over how aggressively the Clinton Foundation should be investigated.

The watchdog office has concluded that Mr McCabe authorized FBI officials to speak to a Wall Street Journal reporter for that story and that he had not been forthcoming with investigators, which Mr McCabe denies.
