Donald Trump mercilessly mocked for saying Hurricane Florence is 'one of the wettest from the standpoint of water'

Donald Trump has been mocked after saying Hurricane Florence was “one of the wettest the US has ever seen from the standpoint of water”.

The president tweeted a thank you message to emergency services and authorities after Florence ravaged the Carolinas.

At least 36 people were killed by the storm since it landed on Friday.

In his message, Mr Trump said the hurricane was “certainly not good”.

He said: “I just want to thank all the incredible men and women who have done such a great job in helping with Florence.

“This is a tough hurricane, one of the wettest we have ever seen from the standpoint of water. Rarely have we had an experience like it and it is certainly not good.

“But the people of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia – all of the areas affected – you’ve been incredible. There’s been a loss of life and may God be with them and their families.

“It’s tough to understand but this has been a really difficult period of time for a lot of people.”

It comes after the President, during a visit to the Carolinas, told a victim of the hurricane "at least you got a nice boat out of it" when the homeowner explained that one had washed up in his backyard.

The president was mercilessly mocked for his “standpoint of the water” remark.

And Graham Taylor remarked: “Is this one of the worst Presidents of the United States the world has ever seen, or the worst? From the standpoint of Presidents.”

One user, @steelderic, said: “Jesus Christ I lost a couple million brain cells listening to this.”

Andrew Damito said: “George Washington inaugural address: ‘Between genuine maxims of an honest and magnanimous policy, and the solid rewards of public prosperity and felicity.’

“Donald Trump: ‘Wettest we have ever seen from a water standpoint.’

Another user, @bornmiserable, mocked: “Swimming pools are tremendously wet from the standpoint of water, you can get very wet inside a swimming pool. WET!"

Tim Swain said: “’One of the wettest we’ve seen, from the standpoint of water.’ That’s the take you kept for the final version?”

It came as Mr Trump warned South Carolina “water is coming your way” in the aftermath of Florence.

He made the comments while visiting Conway and speaking to people who were preparing to evacuate as rivers rose.

“Over the next couple of days, it's going to get rough in South Carolina. Whatever you need from Washington, we are there

"Now it looks nice, but it's really the calm before the storm.”
