Donald Trump is "safe" after "multiple" gunshots were fired near his golf course in Florida.

According to a statement from Steven Cheung, the Trump Campaign Communications Director, the former president, 78, was golfing at Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday, Sept. 15, when the incident occurred.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time," Cheung said.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Chief of Communications for the United States Secret Service, wrote in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), "The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m."

He also stated that Trump "is safe" and added that the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office "will have more details soon."

The West Palm Beach Police Department, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, the Secret Service and Cheung have not immediately responded to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

Later on Sunday, the FBI said it “is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump,” per CNN.

The shooting took place two months after Trump was rushed off the stage at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13 after gunshots rang out.

Trump was injured in the incident, which has since been called an assassination attempt. The Republican nominee was mid-speech when the incident occurred. Footage taken at the event and shared on social media showed Trump turn toward the noise and briefly grab his ear, before Secret Service agents rushed the stage and surrounded him.

Butler County, Pa., District Attorney Richard Goldinger previously confirmed to PEOPLE that the shooter died and at least one spectator at the rally died, with two others injured and hospitalized.
