Donald Trump's hair has long been beset by dye rumours and wig suspicions, but now the US president now appears to be going for a different look.

During a press conference in the White House Rose Garden on Tuesday, Mr Trump appeared to have ditched his normal orange barnet for a silvery shade of white.

The president is known for his interest in maintaining his appearance with a year-long tan and full head of bright coiffured hair.

But now he appears to be going for a more natural look just four months off the presidential elections in November.

Twitter users were quick to point out that Mr Trump's trademark hair colour had given way to a hue more often associated with 74-year-olds.

After Tuesday's press conference, Twitter user Mark Worthy said: "Is my TV color screwed up, or did 45 finally stop dying his hair that terrible orange?"

Another commenter said: "Trump appears to be missing his hair colour. His hair is now gray. Odd."

A third said: "It seems Trump has made the best decision of his presidency thus far...stopped dying his hair orange."

Mr Trump has been dogged by rumours of wigs and hair transplants for years.

But the president has often defend himself from claims that it's not his own real hair, stating: "It’s better than most of my friends."

He has famously brought up his hair on many different occasions, including interviews and campaign rallies.

In February, he bragged "the hair looks good" as an unflattering tan line on his face was made fun of on Twitter.

He tweeted: "More Fake News. This was photoshopped, obviously, but the wind was strong and the hair looks good? Anything to demean!"

Meanwhile, in 2018 questions were raised about the exact nature of Mr Trump's mane when footage went viral showing Trump’s hair being dramatically swept about in a blustery wind.

It revealed what appeared to be a large hairless patch at the rear of his head.

The film was captured as Mr Trump boarded Air Force One.

As he clambered up the stairs to the aircraft, he appeared to be struck from behind by a forceful gust and the wind cleaved his hair in two, revealing what appeared to be a bare scalp.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2011, Mr Trump also talked about his hair upkeep.

He said: "Ok, what I do is, wash it with Head and Shoulders. I don’t dry it, though. I let it dry by itself. It takes about an hour."

At a campaign rally in North Carolina in September 2019, he again defended his hair as being "mine".

Originally scheduled for the Fayetteville Regional Airport, it was moved to the Crown Expo Center, because it had a bigger capacity and the weather forecast predicted rain.

"I was even willing to stand out in the rain and get my hair soaking wet but they said it was a little bit out of your district," Mr Trump told the crowd.

"But I was willing to do it. I would’ve taken it. I would’ve been very proud to have done it. It would have shown it’s my real hair at least," he said of his willingness to be outside in a potential rain shower.

"It’s my hair. May not be great, but I will say it’s better than most of my friends' who are the same age."

His hair had also hit the headlines earlier in June 2019 when the president was photographed during a visit to an evangelical church in McLean, Virginia.

He arrived directly from his golf outing at Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls still wearing his golf shoes.

When he removed a baseball cap he was seen with slicked back hair, which prompted much speculation about a new do on social media.

But he returned to his conventional appearance hours later while attending a gala.
