Donald Trump warns North Korea talks could be called off if not 'fruitful'

Donald Trump has said that if his planned talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un are not “fruitful” then he will call them off.

The US President said that CIA director Mike Pompeo “got along really well” with Kim in their recent secret meeting as he declared: "we've never been in a position like this" with the rogue state.

But Mr Trump added that if he decides the meeting with the North's leader would not produce the results the US wants then “we're not going to go.”

The president was speaking at a news conference with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Florida on Wednesday.

He said that his campaign of "maximum pressure" on North Korea would continue until Pyongyang gave up nuclear weapons.

On the issue of the planned meeting, he said: "If I think that if it's a meeting that is not going to be fruitful we're not going to go.

“If the meeting when I'm there is not fruitful I will respectfully leave the meeting.”

Mr Pompeo’s secret meeting with Kim was the highest level meeting between the two countries since 2000.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mr Trump said his meeting with the North Korean leader could come “in early June or a little before”.

But he conceded it was possible that the unprecedented meeting might not happen at all.

“It’s possible things won’t go well and we won’t have the meetings… we will see what happens,” the president said.
