Convicted felon Donald Trump would be welcome in Scotland if he wins the US presidency, according to the SNP’s Westminster leader.

Stephen Flynn responded in the positive when asked the direct question after the general election leaders’ debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

Trump’s latest White House bid suffered a blow after he was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying records in an effort to keep an adult film star quiet about an affair that occurred in the 2000s.

Despite the guilty verdict, the Republican is neck and neck in the polls with President Biden in this year’s presidential election.

In an interview with ITV, Flynn, who is seeking re-election to Westminster on July 4th, was asked if Trump would be welcome in Scotland if he wins in November.

He replied: “Yes.”

Trump has extensive business interests in Scotland, including a golf course in Aberdeenshire which opened in 2012.

Green MSP Ross Greer said:"Donald Trump was one of the most dangerous, racist and downright criminal presidents in recent US history.

"Another Trump presidency would be catastrophic for America, for our climate and for global democracy. He stirs up hatred against vulnerable people wherever he goes and for that reason alone he should never be welcome in Scotland.

"Trump's professed love of Scotland certainly isn't reciprocal and given the SNP's own shameful history of indulging him as he bullied his way across Aberdeenshire, this is one issue where they'd be best taking a vow of silence."
