A small Donegal tourism company has been left devastated after the vintage caravan they used for storing their equipment was stolen and then set alight.

Selkie Sailing organise sailing tours across beautiful West Donegal. They use a vintage caravan which they normally locate at Magheraroarty Pier, the Irish Mirror reports.

But they were left stunned a couple of days ago when the caravan went missing. The caravan contained a number of valuable surfboards and bodyboards which are used by people taking tours.

However, a search for the caravan turned to misery when the vehicle was found burned out and gutted by the side of a local road. Selkie Sailing owner Gareth Doherty, a brother of well-known Donegal Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty, says he is gutted by what has happened.

The company now faces an uncertain future after the destruction of the property. Sadly, company owner Gareth Doherty then discovered the caravan burnt out on the side of the road yesterday.

Mr Doherty said the local community had been very encouraging and allowed them to park the caravan at the pier which he said they were very grateful for. However, the theft and arson attack on the caravan now leaves them up in the air.

"It's a financial 'loss' that we might not be able to recover," he said. And he appealed to anybody who may have any information on the theft of the caravan to come forward.

"It's disappointing. If anyone has any information we would like to hear from you."
