Doom Patrol showrunner Jeremy Carver has admitted that some valuable lessons learned during his time working on Supernatural helped shape the new DC series.

The series stars Penny Dreadful's Timothy Dalton, Matt Bomer, Aladdin's Alan Tudyk, Diane Guerrero, Joivan Wade, April Bowlby and the voice of Brendan Fraser – but their characters could've turned out very differently had Jeremy not learned to embrace the narrative's craziness.

Chatting to Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner highlighted how bringing actor Mark Sheppard over from Supernatural to Doom Patrol is an example of how he's learned not to worry about big name talents selling his work.

"Speaking specifically to a person like Mark Sheppard, I learned to know when you have a winner," he explained. "I wasn't particularly worried about Mark being known as Crowley (from Supernatural), because he's a fantastic actor, so why wouldn't I have availed myself of his talents? That was one thing I learned right there.

"But there's a multitude of things" Jeremy added, "you can go anywhere you want to go with the show in terms of craziness, even into a person's brain, and as long as your characters stay true to themselves, it will work.

"That was a lesson very much learned on Supernatural and the places we went there, that I took and applied to Doom Patrol."

Doom Patrol is now available on streaming service DC Universe.
