The Doors relight the fire for 50th anniversary show in Los Angeles

The remaining members of The Doors have come together for a special performance celebrating 50 years since the release of their self-titled debut album.

John Densmore and Robby Krieger were joined by hundreds of fans in a low key event at the Venice Beach neighbourhood of Los Angeles where the band was formed.

The group, known for hits such as Light My Fire and Riders On The Storm, performed LA Woman for the crowd.

"Well, it's 50 years of The Doors. We started right here in Venice and we're ending up right here in Venice too so it's all a cycle, you know?" said guitarist Robby Krieger.

"The ocean is just right out there and that's where Jim got the idea to write the song Moonlight Drive," said drummer John Densmore.

"So then we went to Hollywood and made it, but our roots are here," he added.

With family members of the late Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek present, the two surviving members proclaimed 4 January the "Day of The Doors".

"Even though Robby and I sometimes haven't played for years, for me anyway, a couple bars and I'm back," Densmore said.

"When you do the songs for many, many years over a lifetime they're in your blood and it only takes a second to chase down the magic."

Jim Morrison, the band's lead singer and songwriter, died in 1971 at age 27.

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek followed in 2013 - he was 74 years old.

"You know you cannot say what Jim would have done or said because he always would do something different, but I bet you he would've been here and he would've dug it and I think he would've been proud," Densmore said.

"I'm sure Ray would've loved it."

One of the most celebrated bands of the 1960s, The Doors have also announced a special anniversary deluxe edition of their debut LP.

The three CD/LP package will also be available digitally, and will include remastered mixes and live performances. It will also include a book with previously unseen photos of the group.
