Dothan United holds open tryouts ahead 2024 season

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The inaugural season for the Dothan United Dragons in the United Soccer League is nearing and on Saturday the team held open tryouts for people across the state and country to try and earn them a spot on the squad.

The tryouts were held at Rip Hewes Stadium in Dothan.

Over 50 prospective players were on the pitch showcasing their talent in front of the United coaching staff led by Head Coach Carl Reynolds.

During the morning session, the players competed in drills and learned the identity of this year’s USL squad. In the afternoon session, the players got to show off as they scrimmaged against one another.

Every player on the pitch was competing to make a roster that only had 26 spots on it. 18 players have already been signed to the team and will arrive in the Circle City next month.

This leaves only a few spots on the roster, which will feature some local talent.

“We’ve taken a few already,” Reynolds said. “So obviously, we’ve had people come out and impress and we have already had conversations that we are excited about. Local guys that can come in and try to earn a spot on the gameday squad.”

Dothan United opens its season against Southern Soccer Academy on May 15.
