John, who was from Waterfall on the outskirts of Cork and worked as a Senior Director in FTI Consulting in London, passed away in Cork’s Marymount Hospice on Sunday morning aged 34, according to the Irish Examiner.
The nature of his illness is unclear, but it is thought that he had been ill for a while.
The Downton Abbey actress, who played Lady Mary Crawley, is thought to have been dating John since 2013, having been introduced by her co-star Allen Leech (a former chauffeur on the show).

The couple kept themselves private, although their relationship made the news earlier this year with reports that they had become engaged.
It’s said that Michelle was excitedly showing off her engagement ring during Downton Abbey screen tests.
However, they did not comment publicly on their relationship, with Michelle saying in September 2014: “I have a wonderful man in my life from Ireland. We were introduced by Allen Leech. That’s all you need to know.”

Michelle has been nominated for three Emmys and a Golden Globe for her role on Downton Abbey.
In a statement to WENN, she’s asked for privacy at this tragic time, saying: “The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private.”
Our thoughts are with Michelle and all of John’s loved ones at this time.
