The bombs went off near a bus stop close to the Bab al-Saghir cemetery, not far from the Old City. More than 100 people are reportedly injured. Among the debris were several shattered wheelchairs, as many pilgrims come to pray for relief from their illnesses.

The bombings are among the worst terrorist attacks in the Syrian capital in six years of civil war, which has cost so far some 310,000 lives.

Although the district that was attacked is the home to many revered Shi’ite sites, it is also

the location of Sunni mosques.
