Dozens of Oil Tankers Anchored Off Californian Coast Amid Collapse in Demand

Dozens of oil tankers were anchored off the Californian coast on April 23 as the reduced demand for oil takes hold.

Video released by the US Coast Guard shows the tankers anchored in the waters near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The tankers are acting as storage tanks for oil as demand has reduced throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“The supply chain is being backed up, and tankers are now being used to store product that would have originally gone out to the supply chain,” said Scott Lauermann, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, when speaking to the Los Angeles Times. Credit: US Coast Guard via Storyful
