Dozens Rescued as Deadly Flooding Swamps Central Italy

At least seven people were dead and three missing after heavy rain brought intense flooding to central Italy, the country’s fire and rescue service said on September 16.

Italy’s national fire service, the Vigili del Fuoco, said dozens of rescues were carried out overnight on September 15-16, with some taken refuge in trees and on the roofs of houses. Video here shows responder sin the town of Senigallia, in the eastern Marche region.

The Misa River flowing through Senigallia reached a peak early on Friday morning, and began slowly receding, the local municipality said.

An orange alert issued on Thursday remained in place for parts of central and southern Italy on Friday, including the Campania and Lazio regions, as rain and strong winds were expected to continue through to the afternoon. Credit: Vigili del Fuoco via Storyful
