Dr Amir Khan urges Brits to eat one fruit to help prevent cancer and diabetes

We're all aware of the health benefits of fruit, but some varieties possess truly remarkable properties.

Recently, ITV's Dr Amir Khan highlighted one particular fruit that can help reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes. The NHS doctor, known for sharing health advice on Lorraine, recommends we all consume more pears due to their numerous benefits.

In a candid social media video, he explained: "Pears are a good source of soluble and insoluble fibre. Both of them help regulate our valve movements, but also feed our gut bacteria, and pears harbour many beneficial plant compounds.

"Those pears that you can buy with a little red hue to them can protect our heart health, and these green pears have compounds that protect our eye health, especially as we get older.

"Some of these plant compounds have been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers. Pears are also a rich source of flavonoids, copper, Vitamin C and Vitamin K. All of which reduce inflammation within our body."

Dr Amir Khan also noted pears are rich in anthocyanin, which are water-soluble pigments found in plants. A study shows people who eat five portions of anthocyanin-rich fruit per week, like pears, can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by a staggering 23%.

Pears, rich in fibre, slow down the digestive process, meaning the body has more time to break down and absorb carbohydrates. This is a factor which contributes to regulating blood sugar levels.

As well as this, pears are low on calories but high in water content, making them a diet-friendly choice for those aiming to lose weight as they keep you feeling full for longer.

People were delighted by the revelation, as there's a genuine affection for indulging in this particular fruit across Britain.

One individual expressed surprise, writing: "Wow. I love pears but didn't realise they were so beneficial."

While another echoed the sentiment, stating: "Tasty too. I love pears." Additionally, a third commented: "If only all GPs were like Dr Amir."

Although eating pears alone will not wholly prevent or cure conditions like cancer or diabetes, research indicates they can boost health. Pears might provide some level of defence against certain cancers including colorectal, breast and lung cancers due to being loaded with essential nutrients and plant compounds with anti-cancer properties, such as vitamin C and flavonoid antioxidants.

They may also contribute to maintaining steady blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
