Dr Michael Mosley's final TV appearance just weeks before he went missing

Dr Michael Mosley's final appearance on TV before he vanished in Greece came five weeks ago. The ITV and Channel 4 regular appeared on BBC Morning Live towards the end of April, before the show went on hiatus for the May half-term.

He was last on TV screens discussing the benefits of intermittent fasting, and whether his popular 5:2 diet would work for everyone in an appearance on BBC Morning Live.

On April 29, he sat down for a chat about his new book, The Fast 800 Treats Recipe Book, and revealed he had begun transform his life when he tried fasting for two days a week more than a decade ago.

"Intermittent fasting simply means abstaining from eating for a while, it doesn’t mean going on a starvation diet or anything like that," he said. "There is time-restricted eating. The idea here is that you just restrict the hours in which you eat, not the calories.

"So, for example, if you stop eating at 7 at night and don’t eat again until 7 the next morning, that is 12-12. You could do 14-10 by not eating until 9, or you might even go 16-8. Most of the science is based around 14-10, but personally I find anything more than 12-12 quite demanding.

"The idea of the 5:2 diet was to cut your calories for two days a week. You go to 800-100 calories two days a week. That triggers a number of beneficial changes. For example, it switches on something called auto-phaging, which is your body's ability to clear out junky old cells.

"Think of it as spring cleaning. The other thing that happens is, when you do that, you shift from burning sugar to burning fat. You release things called ketone bodies, which are good for your brain and trigger all sorts of other beneficial things.

"That is why it seems to be a good thing to do, plus the weight loss, in turn, also improves things. The 5:2 diet is that, and you don’t do it for life. You do it for 8-10-12 weeks and then you switch over to what I call the way of life, which is a healthy Mediterranean diet because it matters what you eat as much as it matters when you eat and how much you eat.

"That is the message I would like to drum home – it is about eating healthy, home-cooked food based around healthy food rather than junk food."
