The first look at Doctor Who's Christmas special certainly makes it appear that Peter Capaldi and David Bradley's Doctors are going to have a very grumpy holiday.

The Twelfth Doctor comes face-to-face with his first incarnation - played here by An Adventure in Space and Time star David Bradley- as both Timelords try to stave off impending regenerations.

Watch a preview of festive special 'Twice Upon a Time', released tonight (November 17) for the BBC's Children in Need, below:

In the clip, the Twelfth Doctor brings his first incarnation and a World War I pilot (Mark Gatiss) into the TARDIS – and let's just say that the First Doctor isn't exactly pleased by his later regeneration or his redesigned TARDIS.

'Twice Upon a Time' serves as a swansong for Peter Capaldi, his co-star Pearl Mackie and showrunner Steven Moffat - but don't expect some "I don't want to go"-level soppiness when the Two Doctors meet.

"David Bradley is such a good swap for William Hartnell," Moffat recently said. "He looks so like him, and can so capture that part. We could actually have, in effect, William Hartnell returning to Doctor Who – and witness to his great horror what he has become."

Moffat has also promised a non-traditional regeneration for Capaldi, no doubt to throw viewers one last curveball as he leaves Doctor Who.

"The one thing I have to say is, it's Christmas Day, we're gonna keep it funny, and we're gonna keep it lively, as well as sad," he promised.

"If we cry, [the audience] won't. We want them to cry. So Doctor Who will laugh bravely into that good night."

Of course, there will actually be three Doctors appearing in 'Twice Upon a Time'. The episode will end with Capaldi regenerating into Jodie Whittaker, thus setting Doctor Who off in a new direction for 2018.
