Dramatic fire rips through 30m wind turbine in Devon

A dramatic fire broke out in Devon where fire crews battled a 30m high fire. A wind turbine near Chulmleigh burst into flames on Friday, September 27, sparking the emergency service response.

Fire crews from South Molton and Witheridge were called to the scene. Upon arrival, fire crews found the engine of a wind turbine "well alight".

The fire in the engine of the turbine was estimated to be 30 metres high. A cordon around the area was set up and firefighters waited for the owner to arrive.

The owner managed to isolate the turbine and the fire. The turbine was severely damaged during the blaze.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental. Devon and Somerset Fire Service added that no one sustained any injuries during the blaze.

The extent of the damage to the wind turbine and impact to the local energy supply is being evaluated.

In a statement, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire control received 999 calls reporting a wind turbine on fire, near Chulmleigh, Devon.

"Two fire engines were sent and on arrival crews confirmed this turbine was well alight from the engine, at the top of the turbine, approx 30 metres high. Crews set up a cordon and waited for the owner to turn up.

"The owner was able to isolated the turbine, which was severely damaged by fire. The cause of the fire was accidental."
