Dramatic Footage of Fiery Plane Crash at Melbourne Shopping Mall

A witness captured dramatic footage of the light plane which crashed into a shopping mall in Essendon, Victoria on February 21.

At a press conference, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane confirmed five people were on board the private charter flight. He said it “looks like no one has survived the crash.”

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews called it “the worst civil aviation accident that our state has seen for 30 years.”

The turboprop Beechcraft Super Air King hit the back of the Direct Factory Outlet mall near Essendon Airport shortly after takeoff around 9 am, crashing into the Focus on Furniture and JB Hi-Fi stores. The mall had not yet opened and Leane said there were no fatalities other than on the aircraft itself.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it had deployed four investigators to the scene.

The plane was heading to King Island in Tasmania, a popular destination for golfers. The Advocate in Tasmania reported those on board were believed to be a pilot in his 60s and four American tourists. Credit: Jordan Fouracre via Storyful
