Dramatic moment hero police officers spring into action to save man as he jumps off bridge

Two police officers have been hailed heroes after footage emerged of of them dramatically rescuing a man as he jumped off a bridge.

Traffic unit officer Brian Rehg and his colleague Lieutenant Chris McCarter hoisted the man up as he was hanging off the bridge’s rails, stopping him from plunging onto a busy road below.

In bodycam footage from the scene in the US state of Tennessee, the officers stand with an unidentified man on the footpath of a raised bridge.

Suddenly the distressed man dashes for the railings and tries to jump but, with his full body dangling perilously from the structure, the officers spring into action.

Thinking quickly, they both grab hold of him and pull him back to safety. After a struggle, they manage to save him before restraining him on the pavement until reinforcements arrive.

The dramatic struggle unfolded on April 8, but the officers’ bosses were so impressed by their heroic actions, they released for the public to see.

Praising them in a Facebook post, Knox County Sheriff’s Office wrote: "Officer Rehg along with KPD Lt. Chris McCarter grabbed and held onto the young man just seconds before he went over the bridge. Because of their vigilance and quick actions the young man is alive today.

"Both Lt. McCarter and Officer Rehg are true local heroes, not just because of this one incident but because they continue to risk their lives daily for the safety of others."

While another said: "My heart almost stopped. Such quick action by this Officer saved this young man's life. The Officer very well could have been pulled over himself. You are a hero."

And numerous others said simply: “Thank you”.
