A journalist who drank ginger shots every day for a week in an effort to test their health benefits noticed two surprising changes to her body.

Diana Buntajova, writing in the Express, last year decided to try the drinks prior to the start of the autumn and the subsequent flu season.

Ginger shots may help with inflammation, indigestion and immunity, according to Healthline, but it also advised people to be aware of their sugar content when purchasing or producing them.

Diana, who said she had "poor immunity", opted for ginger shots from Remedy on The Park. She drank one of the small bottles each day at the same time with her lunch.

She wrote: "On day four of my new ginger shot routine, I started coming down with a cold.

"The well-known feeling of overwhelming tiredness and strange warmth started taking over my body as the day progressed to the afternoon. By night time, my throat started to tingle and I went to bed expecting to wake up with a full-blown illness.

"The next day, a headache woke me up before the alarm told me it was time to start the work week but to my surprise, my cold wasn’t as bad as I expected."

Diana explained that she had inherited coeliac disease and thalassemia, meaning her immune system has "never been up to scratch", with even mild colds having a significant impact on her health.

However, this wasn't the case when she caught this particular cold, as her symptoms didn't worsen and "any sense of blocked nose" was "instantly relieved" by her daily ginger, which she says unblocked her sinuses "within minutes".

She went on to say that by day six, she woke up feeling "completely fine" and described her bout of cold as the "mildest" she'd ever experienced, but that wasn't the only benefit she noticed.

Diana, who revealed that she doesn't drink caffeine, said: "Another perk I noticed during the week was an instant energy rush after consuming the shots."

Justin Gasparovic, a life coach and behavioural psychology expert, told Diana that the energy boost could be down to ginger's impact on the regulation of blood sugar.

He revealed that drinking the shots could lead to “sharper” cognitive function, which could be due to ginger's antioxidant levels, as well as its purported capacity to boost blood flow to the brain.

BBC Good Food explained that the health benefits of ginger may also include the treatment of fever, cold and sickness, supporting heart health, lowering blood pressure and sugar, and reducing menstrual pain.
