Drawings have shown how a new primary school planned to address demand from a major housing development in Bishopton could look once built.

Artist impressions of the additional facility for Dargavel Village, earmarked for land near the far end of Craigton Drive, have been released as part of Renfrewshire Council's bid for planning permission.

The images depict a modern three-storey building, which will have a full-size sports pitch, multi-use games area, rooms available for community use, outdoor learning areas, parent drop-off area and staff car park.

A design and access statement, drafted by jmarchitects on behalf of the local authority, outlined the hopes that are held for what is an important project.

It said: "We believe the proposed development of the new Dargavel Primary School will be a positive addition in the area and provide an expansion to the education facilities within the Dargavel masterplan as it continues to grow.

"The building itself will offer an educational experience for young people that aims to create an inclusive and innovative learning environment as well as spaces that the wider community can thrive in."

It continued: "The design provides an exciting and efficient building which we believe will be a valued addition to the Dargavel area and positively embraced by both pupils, staff and the community."

Last year, the council held two public events as part of a 12-week pre-planning engagement period, at which it presented draft designs and sought feedback from the community.

This was considered and factored into the application for planning permission, which has now been submitted.

It is due to be considered by members of the planning and climate change policy board this year. If the proposal is given the green light by councillors, the local authority aims to start construction in the summer.

The school, which estimates have said will cost in the region of £45 million, is expected to be open by August 2027 and have capacity for 800 pupils.

It was required after historic errors saw the existing school in Arrochar Drive, open since January 2022, built far smaller than it needed to be.
