When are they going to discover that I'm a fraud?
What do Kate Winslet, Tom Hanks, Helen Mirren and Emma Watson all have in common? They all have experienced impostor syndrome, despite being some of the most acclaimed actors around. But which other Hollywood stars suffer from this form of self-doubt?© BANG Showbiz - 2/11
Joshua Jackson
The former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star was catapulted to global fame playing Pacey Whittaker in the teen drama which ran from 1998 to 2003. Jackson, 45, felt guilty about how much money he was earning to act compared to people with more important jobs. He told the Times newspaper earlier this year: "I would make more money doing four episodes of 'Dawson's Creek' than most of my friends' parents made in a year. That was the center of my impostor syndrome, 'You're trying to set me up to be a role model to kids, and I definitely am not, and you're paying me all this money that I don't deserve.'"© BANG Showbiz - 3/11
Lupita Nyong’o
The 'Us' actress spilled the tips that fellow Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, 64, gave her in 2014 as she fretted about her position in the film industry when she hit such a milestone so early on in her career. Lupita, 40, said last year: "She told me that she quit acting for over eight years at some point, and everybody told her that she would never be able to come back to it, and she did. She encouraged me to do what I thought was best for my instrument."©BANG Showbiz - 4/11
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster was awarded the Best Actress Oscar in 1989 for her portrayal of Sarah Tobias, a woman who is violated in a bar by three men, in powerful drama 'The Accused'. But Jodie didn't think she deserved the accolade. Speaking to '60 Minutes', she said: "I thought it was a big fluke. The same way when I walked on the campus at Yale, I thought everybody would find out, and then they’d take the Oscar back."©BANG Showbiz - 5/11
Emma Watson
The 33-year-old actress didn't feel worthy of her acclaim and wealth following her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. She told British Vogue in 2015: "It's something I've really wrestled with. I've gone back and I've quizzed my parents. When I was younger, I just did it. I just acted. It was just there. So now when I receive recognition for my acting, I feel incredibly uncomfortable. I tend to turn in on myself. I feel like an imposter … It was just something I did."(c) BANG Showbiz - 6/11
Lupita Nyong’o
The 40-year-old actress always feels as though she is winging it whenever she lands a new role. Speaking to Time Out in 2016, she said: "What’s it called when you have a disease and it keeps recurring? I go through [acute impostor syndrome] with every role. I think winning an Oscar may in fact have made it worse. Now I’ve achieved this, what am I going to do next? What do I strive for? Then I remember that I didn’t get into acting for the accolades, I got into it for the joy of telling stories."© BANG Showbiz - 7/11
Helen Mirren
Dame Helen Mirren, 78, has used her impostor syndrome feelings to drive her career forward. Speaking to Esquire magazine in 2011, she said: "It would be wrong to think that you’re always right and correct and perfect and brilliant. Self-doubt is the thing that drives you to try to improve yourself."©BANG Showbiz - 8/11
Tom Hanks
Despite being a two-time Academy Award winner, Hanks still sometimes thinks of himself as a "fraud" stealing a living in Hollywood. He told NPR in 2016: "No matter what we've done, there comes a point where you think, 'How did I get here? When are they going to discover that I am, in fact, a fraud and take everything away from me?' There are days when I know that three o'clock tomorrow afternoon I am going to have to deliver some degree of emotional goods, and if I can't do it, that means I'm going to have to fake it. If I fake it, that means they might catch me at faking it, and if they catch me at faking it, well, then it's just doomsday."Famous - 9/11
Tina Fey
The '30 Rock' creator veers between thinking she is incredibly talented to having impostor syndrome. Tina, 53, said: "Ah, the impostor syndrome!? The beauty of the impostor syndrome is you vacillate between extreme egomania, and a complete feeling of, 'I'm a fraud! Oh god, they're on to me! I'm a fraud! So you just try to ride the egomania when it comes and enjoy it, and then slide through the idea of fraud."©BANG Showbiz - 10/11
Penelope Cruz
Despite four decades in the business, the 49-year-old actress admits that every time she steps on set on a new project it feels like she's making her debut. Speaking to CBS in 2009, she said: "I feel every time I’m making a movie, I feel like [it’s] my first movie. Every time I have the same fear that I’m gonna be fired. And I’m not joking. Every movie, the first week, I always feel that they could fire me!”©BANG Showbiz - 11/11
Kate Winslet
Oscar winner Kate Winslet constantly doubts her acting talents when she is filming. The 48-year-old British star still convinces herself that she is "rubbish" when it comes to conveying the right emotion for the cameras. Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper in 2013, she said: "What people really think of me is something I remain blissfully unaware of most of the time. I love acting and all I ever try to do is my best. But even now I always dread those emotional scenes. I’m there thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m rubbish and everyone is going to see it. They’ve cast the wrong person.’ But I have come to realize that those nerves are all part of the process for me."©BANG Showbiz
