Meghan Markle's appearence at last night's Invictus Games opening ceremony may have been the next step in her apparent  transition to become a member of the British royal family, but she chose to remain patriotic to her adopted homeland with her style choices for the landmark moment, wearing pieces by two of her favourite Canadian labels.

As an actress and philanthropist, Markle has already established a sleek, modern personal style which tends to to consist of sharply-cut tailoring and a palette of neutral hues. Last night, she wore a maroon midi dress with a pleated chiffon skirt by Aritzia and shoulder-robed a matching burgundy biker jacket by Mackage over the top.

Casual yet elegant, the look suggested that Markle is not planning to eschew her usual styling strategy as she takes the next step in the public story of her romance with Prince Harry, who founded the Invictus Games.

Undoubtedly, though, there is now more attention on what she wears; Markle has become the most Googled actress in the world since news of her relationship broke last year and she has already been hailed as a fashion influencer.

The ‘Meghan effect’ was thought to have prompted a 67% increase in searches for vegan leather leggings after she said in an interview with Good Housekeeping that they were one of her wardrobe staples while shoe designer Sarah Flint has said that she notices a spike in sales when the Suits star wears her designs.

The Aritzia dress, which comes with an affordable $185 (£111) price tag, which Markle wore last night is also already sold out, although it is available in other colours. The burgundy biker jacket is more of an investment, at £518.

Mackage and Aritzia are both labels which Markle has worn before.

In 2015, she attended Mackage’s show at Toronto fashion week, wearing a cream jacket and shift dress by the label. Started by friends Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan in 1999, Mackage specialises in stylish yet functional outerwear. Markle was seen wearing its long navy military coat when she arrived at Heathrow in December.

Thank you @houseofmackage for a beautiful show! What talent! ❤️Xx MM (full look by #mackage)

Markle wore a white Aritzia blazer over a navy Antonio Berardi dress in May when she watched Harry play in the Audi polo challenge tournament. The label has boutiques across Canada and the US, including in Markle's hometown of L.A.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Markle confirmed that she has a refreshingly high-low attitude to fashion. She said that she has loved wearing London- based, Canada-born Erdem Moralioglu’s opulent designs for years but also relayed the tale of having to dash into H&M to buy a black dress for for her Suits audition. For the magazine’s shoot, Markle was styled in a Princess-worthy ballgown by American designer Carolina Herrera.

With Markle expected to attend more Invictus Games events in the coming days, expect to see plenty more clues about how her style is evolving to suit the new role which the world believes she is preparing to take on.
