Drink-driver Daniel Gladwin crashed his van when more than three times the legal limit. The 36-year-old was involved in a collision on Northwood Lane, in Clayton, at 11.30pm on October 28.

He was found in the driver's seat and failed a roadside breath test. He was taken to custody where he was breathalysed and gave a reading of 108 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, against the legal limit of 35.

Now he has been hit with a 25-month driving ban and a £2,417 court bill at North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

Prosecutor Suzanne Swindail said: "A member of the public stopped to check the driver was the only occupant. The witness suspected the driver had been drinking and left the scene. Police found the vehicle had substantial damage. It had collided with a lamppost and other street furniture. The defendant was in the driver's seat and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol."

In his police interview Gladwin said he had been drinking earlier and had three pints of Madri before driving home. But the carriageway was slippery with leaves and he crashed his van.

Gladwin, of Medway Place, Clayton, pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

Representing himself, Gladwin said: "I was at my brother's house and having a drink. I fell asleep. I woke up and I went to drive home. I have been driving for 17 years and have a clean driving licence. It was my work van. I work all over the country."

Magistrates fined Gladwin £1,666 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £666 surcharge. His ban will be reduced by 25 weeks if he completes a drink-drivers' rehabilitation course.
