A Devon primary school brought in bottled water and hand sanitiser after an issue arose with its tap water. Worried parents of children at Starcross Primary School were sent an email from the school on Wednesday, June 19, headed 'important information regarding water supply at school'.

Head teacher Tara Trail said she alerted the water company as they were concerned the water wasn't running as clear as usual. After the original email was sent out, a parent reported that the village's local Spar shop was running out of bottled water.

The original email to parents stated: "We are writing to inform you of an issue that we have experienced with our water supply this afternoon. An engineer from South West Water is expected to attend this afternoon to resolve the issue and to provide us with more information.

"When we have been advised from South West Water we will then update you. In the meantime, South West Water advised us to use bottled water and hand sanitiser.

"Please be assured that all advice was put in place immediately. Since lunchtime, all children's water bottles were emptied and bottled water has been provided in classrooms. In addition, each class and toilet has also been provided with hand sanitiser."

Ms Trail later confirmed that South West Water had informed the school the water was safe to drink. An engineer attended the school on the morning of Thursday, June 20, after which Ms Trail said the water had been declared safe.

In a second email to parents sent on the evening of Wednesday, June 19, she said: "Just to update you on the situation with our water. We have been told by South West Water that the water is safe and we were advised to run some of the taps for an hour. I did that and the water was running clear before I left school.

"Some local homes were also affected and they received the same advice from SW Water. I will check it again first thing tomorrow and run the taps again to be sure. We have brought bottled water and will have it available in the classrooms in case it is needed. We also have hand sanitizer readily available in all classrooms and in all toilets.

"Please be reassured that we take the safety of your children and our staff very seriously. We responded as soon as we discovered the problem and sought advice from South West Water.

"Thank you for your continued support."

South West Water said: “We were informed of discoloured water at Starcross Primary School yesterday afternoon and advised the school to run their taps until the water ran clear.

“We have fully investigated the network to confirm there are no wider issues and have confirmed with the school that their water is now clear.”
