Driver Charged After Rollover School Bus Crash in Albuquerque

A driver was charged by the Albuquerque Police after allegedly crashing into a school bus and causing it to flip, officials said, injuring students onboard.

According to police, witnesses said Mario Perez, age 49, was driving a Ford Mustang while racing another car, reaching an estimated 110 miles per hour.

Perez allegedly crashed into the passenger side of the school bus, causing the bus to roll over. A witness said the car did not stop.

There were 23 children on the bus, police said, with seven children transported to medical centers to be checked. Two children “sustained serious injuries to their legs” and required surgery, while another child required surgery for a pelvic fracture.

A DWI officer who assessed Perez said they found no signs of impairment, police said.

The police charged Perez with two counts of Great Bodily Harm by Vehicle, a third-degree felony.
