An elderly man died after the car he was driving hit a hedgerow and ended up in a ditch. An air ambulance, paramedics and police were sent to the scene on A531 Main Road, in Wrinehill, yesterday morning.

But despite the best efforts of bystanders who carried out CPR until paramedics arrived, he was confirmed dead at the scene. The road was closed for a number of hours following the tragedy. His next of kin have been informed.

The alarm was raised at 11.08am when the black Vauxhall Astra left the road. A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We were called at 11.15am on Sunday to Main Road, Wrinehill, Newcastle-under-Lyme, following reports of a collision. Officers attended along with colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service and the air ambulance.

"A black Vauxhall Astra was found in collision with a hedgerow in a ditch. The road was closed between Checkley Lane and Bowsey Wood Road while emergency services were in attendance. The driver and sole occupant of the car, a man in his 80s, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

"A file has been prepared for HM Coroner. The man’s next of kin has been informed. Highways were informed to assist with traffic management and to clear debris."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a car which had left the road. An ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. On arrival crews found bystanders performing CPR on the driver of the car. Ambulance staff took over resuscitation attempts but sadly despite the best efforts of everyone on the scene, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased at the scene."
