Police in Co Down have shared details of three arrests on Sunday in which drivers were drunk at the wheel – with one allegedly so inebriated he could not stand nor talk to officers.

The first incident happened in Ballynahinch after a Volkswagen Golf was stopped in the main street. Two arrests were made and a quality of drugs recovered from the vehicle.

The driver was found to be disqualified from driving and had no insurance. The passenger was also taken into custody.

The second operation took place in Clough when a motorist was reported to be driving erratically. The driver of the car was subsequently found to be over the limit while the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

On a Facebook post, Police Newry, Mourne and Down said: "The driver of this Volkswagen Golf was stopped this evening in Ballynahinch. He was so drunk that he struggled to stand and talk properly.

"He was also disqualified from driving until 2027, had no insurance on his car and had drugs in his car. He was arrested, as well as the passenger in the car, who was also arrested. The car was seized. He faces the possibility of going to prison when he attends court, due to his actions and his clear disregard for other road users!

"At the same time, officers in Clough stopped another drink driver who was reported as driving all over the road. Not only was he drunk, but the car which he was driving had been stolen. He was also arrested."
