Police are appealing for witnesses after officers arrived at a crash in Essex last night with the driver "nowhere to be seen".

Essex Police were called to a crash at around 9.30pm last night in the Roydon area.

When officers arrived, they say they found a car which "stank of alcohol" and a driver was not at the scene.

A photo taken by officers shows a police car on the scene with a car upside down after the incident.

The force is now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the crash, or the driver leaving the scene.

A roads policing unit spokesman tweeted: "We went to an RTC around 9.30pm last night in the Roydon area.

"On arrival the car stank of alcohol and the driver was nowhere to be seen - did you see it or the driver leaving the scene? Please contact us either directly, or anon via @CSinEssex."

Anyone with any information on this incident should contact police directly on 101 or submit a report to Crimestoppers anonymously on their website or by calling 0800 555 111.
