Driver Survives After SUV Falls Off Highway Overpass: ‘He Was Scared,’ Says Bystander Who Rushed to Help
“I don’t understand how you fall from that high and [live],” an eyewitness said
A two-vehicle crash on a highway overpass in Miami ended with one of the SUVs falling off the overpass onto the street below — with lucky bystanders rushing to aid the driver.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, Florida Highway Patrol officials responded to a call involving a crash between a green Toyota SUV and a blue Mazda SUV, which resulted in one of the vehicles falling from the I-95 overpass in Miami, according to local NBC affiliate WTVJ.
At 3:40 p.m., the green SUV’s driver lost control due to the crash and hit a barrier wall, causing the SUV to overturn, fall off the overpass and land onto a hard fence barrier, officials said, per WTVJ.

Representatives from the Florida Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Witness Julio Martinez, who said the vehicle narrowly missed falling on him, described the aftermath to CBS affiliate WFOR-TV.
“If the car [doesn't] stop over there on the fence, I cannot talk to you now. ... [The driver] was scared, but when we took him out, I said 'Oye, you feel good? You feel good?' He said, 'Yeah, I feel good,' " Martinez said of how he and other good Samaritans assisted.

Per WSVN, local fire rescue officials confirmed that the driver of the green Toyota SUV was in “completely stable” condition and was transported to a local trauma center as a precaution.
“It’s just by the grace of God that the people lived, because I don’t understand how you fall from that high and [live],” witness Mariah Lewis told the outlet, “and [the driver] literally got out, and he was walking when he got out of the car. They didn’t have to drag him out.”
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
