Driver taken to hospital after Cambridgeshire school bus crashes into ditch with children inside

A school bus driver has been taken to hospital after crashing into a ditch in Cambridgeshire on Thursday (November 14). Six children and the driver were on board the bus when it crashed into a ditch on the B1169 in Leverington Common near Wisbech.

The bus driver had minor injuries and was taken to hospital, according to the East of England Ambulance Service. All six children were rescued from the bus and are not thought to have been seriously injured, according to Cambridgeshire Police.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called just before 5.15pm with reports that a bus had gone into a ditch on the B1169 in Leverington Common. Three ambulances, three ambulance officer vehicles and a critical care paramedic were sent to the scene.

"The driver of the bus was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with minor injuries. Six children were assessed at the scene and did not require transportation to hospital."

Police and firefighters also attended the scene. A spokesperson from the Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews from Dogsthorpe and Wisbech were called to a road traffic collision on Garden Lane in Wisbech St Mary at around 5.15pm.

"Firefighters arrived to find a bus in a water filled ditch. They assisted the driver from the vehicle, which has been safely evacuated.The crews returned to their stations by 7pm."

The road was closed while emergency services responded and motorists were told to avoid the area. A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "Anyone with any information is asked to contact us online or call us on 101 quoting incident 395 of 14 November."
