Drivers will get '60 per cent' discount on car insurance thanks to 'quick check'

Drivers could get a whopping 60 per cent bonus on their car insurance if they contact the Motor Insurers’ Bureau to get access to their driving data. UK drivers and road users could be at risk of losing their car insurance benefits without knowing.

Motorists up and down the country face invalidating their no claims discount and still be paying full price for cover. Before taking out a policy, an expert has warned to check the claims status before agreeing, so you make sure all information is correct.

Greg Wilson, CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, said: "It’s no surprise drivers are keen to protect their no claims discount.” He added: “Without realising, certain changes to the policy, such as becoming a named driver instead of the main driver or having a gap of more than two years, say across the pandemic when they weren’t driving – could wipe clean the no claims build-up and void the insurance policy.”

The difference between zero and five years no claims bonus can be significant and Mr Wilson estimated a 30 per cent discount for one claim-free year and "60 per cent" for five claim-free years. Wilson commented: “No claims discount protection is another hot topic for discussion this year.

“Customers need to check the details through with their insurer, get a quote with and without the additional protection for comparison and make sure their bonus is protected continuously should they decide to switch providers.”

Mr Wilson said it is “essential” drivers check the details thoroughly and make sure they have “adequate” protection. Your no claims discount builds up with each claim-free year, so the longer you go claim-free the bigger your discount will be. No claims discounts vary from insurer to insurer, but they can be as much as 30 per cent for one claim-free year and 60% for five claim-free years.
