Millions of drivers could see their car insurance claim "REFUSED" - for having a common car feature. 42 per cent of drivers across the UK use hanging air fresheners in their vehicles as standard - but insurers can view the products as a risk.

This can lead to issues for motorists, road users and drivers ahead of Christmas. Insurers can refuse claims on the basis of whether anything was distracting the motorists and whether this had an impact on the accident or collision.

Tom Banks, car insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: "Many of us won’t think twice about hanging up an air freshener in the car, or tucking into a packet of crisps - but these kinds of activities can sometimes have an impact on our driving, and even our insurance.

"If you are involved in a road collision and it’s proven that you were distracted, your insurer could potentially refuse to pay out for your claim. So in the interests of road safety - and your wallet as well - stay focused on the road."

Citizens Advice advised: "Your insurer must give you a reason for refusing to pay your claim. Check the details of your policy carefully to make sure that their decision is reasonable. If you think your insurer is being unreasonable in refusing your claim, you can try to negotiate with them.

"If you are still not satisfied with the way your claim has been dealt with, you can make a complaint using their complaints process." Your insurer may agree to pay some of your claim, but not the full amount, the group goes on to advise road users.

If you think your insurer is acting unreasonably in refusing to pay the full amount of your claim you should try to negotiate with them to reach an agreement. If you’re not satisfied with what your insurer offers, you can complain using your insurers complaints process.
