Drivers face £1,000 fines for not wiping their number plate in a crackdown. LKQ Euro Car Parts, a motoring group, recommended that all drivers make sure their number plates are visible in order to avoid penalties up and down the country.

They said: "The number plates on your vehicle should be legible at all times, and drivers caught with an obstructed plate could receive a fine of up to £1,000. Something as simple as a build-up of dirt and dust can block the letters and numbers, so it’s important to clean your vehicle regularly to ensure your number plate is always visible."

They added: "If you don’t have time to clean your whole vehicle, make sure to check your numberplate on a regular basis and give it a quick wash down with a sponge and some soapy water so it remains legible and within regulations.

"This should only take a minute or two, and can mean you avoid a hefty fine." Darryl Bowman from Cuvva said in his own warning: “When it comes to number plate changes, there's always a rush for people to get their hands on the latest plate.

"But there are opportunities to score deals on slightly older cars with older plates. If you're contemplating selling your car, doing so before the new plates are released could net you a higher price. While if you're in the market to buy a new car, waiting for the new plates may result in a better price, as the current ones become one plate older."

Alongside having the correct number plate, drivers should also make sure that their number plates are clean and legible. Cuvva says this is not "explicitly defined" as a driving law if an ANPR camera cannot read your plate you could be fined up to £1,000 and face three penalty points.
