Drivers face £200 fine for breaking rule which was imposed 'over Christmas'
Hundreds of drivers risk a £200 penalty for breaking a 30mph speed limit during the Christmas period. Police in and around Swindon and Wiltshire have been cracking down on speeding this Christmas, as officers lie in wait with hidden cameras.
The worst day for speeding on 20mph roads is January 1, when 92 per cent of cars were found to be exceeding the limit in 2021. This year, Wiltshire Police have been out lying in wait on certain roads to try and catch those who think the law doesn't apply between Christmas and New Year's.
On Sunday, December 29, officers from the Royal Wootton Bassett Neighbourhood Policing Team specifically targeted Calne Road, Lyneham, Broad Town, Hook and Bath Road. "We are pleased to say the majority of road users were abiding by the speed limits at these locations," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.

"However, one driver was given words of advice for exceeding the 30mph limit. Three drivers were issued a traffic offence report who were observed doing 40mph in a 30mph limit. Please remember speeding is one of the fatal five and there is no excuse."
Wiltshire Police say this is only the first of many hidden speed checks which will take place across Swindon and Wiltshire over the festive period. Tom Banks, car insurance expert at Go Compare, added: “Some roads can be quieter, which might make it tempting to put your foot down. However, it’s critical that you resist the urge and stick to the speed limits.
“Christmas is a special time of the year for all of us and nobody wants to spend it dealing with an accident." Mr Banks went on and added: "Keep an eye on your speed and be particularly alert to any hazards to stay safe and minimise the chances of a collision.”
