Drivers have been warned they face £200 fines for making a common modification to their car before Christmas. Phil Leese, specialist motor trading manager at vehicle insurance broker ChoiceQuote, warned drivers should think twice before buying cheap accessories.

He warned: "Adding car accessories to your vehicle is a great way to not only personalise your car to your own style but it can add extra convenience and storage. Some of these car accessories that have gained popularity on TikTok may not be worth the investment as they could lead to distracted driving which could result in penalty points, fines and invalidating insurance."

ChoiceQuote advised against buying light-up window decorations, in particular. A recent study conducted by specialist broker ChoiceQuote has revealed that drivers are increasingly turning to social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube to answer car-related queries.

By analysing popular Google and social media search terms, the study found that MOTs, Car Insurance and Car Tax are the most searched for car themes across the internet. This could suggest that drivers are looking for ways they can stay compliant, safe, and financially protected while they are on the road.

The study shows a strong demand for accessible guidance on various car-related queries including MOTs, Car Insurance, Car Tax, Maintenance and Repairs, Selling Cars and Driving Tips. The cost of living has led to drivers to search for more ways to cut costs and save money as the cost of owning a vehicle increases.

Although many drivers make modifications to their vehicles, search volumes for this topic were low compared to other categories. Understanding whether financed cars can be modified had the highest traffic, with 260 monthly searches.

Some modifications will need to be carried out by a fully qualified mechanic, usually at a body shop garage. The most common modifications drivers make to their vehicle at home include changing spoilers, wheels, and exterior paint.
