Drivers face £5,000 fines over 'what they wear' to 'pop out to shops'
Drivers could face £5,000 fine as they are warned how to dress in their car. Motorists face £5,000 fines when popping out to the shops or an errand on a short journey in their motor - and it is all because of how they DRESS at the wheel.
Experts at Vape Globe warned: "While not illegal to drive in pyjamas, you could still be faced with a hefty penalty fine if your driving is considered unsafe due to what you're wearing." Rule 97 of the Highway Code says: "The clothing and footwear you choose to wear whilst you are driving must not prevent you from using the controls in the correct manner."
Drive Johnsons explains: "While not being illegal to drive in pyjamas, you could still be faced with a hefty penalty fine if your driving is considered unsafe due to what you’re wearing. If you’re pulled over for driving without due care and attention, you could be slapped with a £100 on the spot fine, and in more severe cases a maximum fine of up to £5,000 could be issued."

Drivers should wear comfortable shoes such as trainers or plimsoles (we don’t recommend driving in flip-flops, heels, slippers or barefoot for that matter), loose-fitting trousers that don’t restrict movement when using the pedals and a T-shirt, top or jumper that allows you to move your arms freely to steer and use the gear stick.
According to the RAC there are some guidelines for what footwear is suitable when driving. Shoes should have a sole no thicker than 10mm, but the sole should not be too thin or soft and provide enough grip to stop your foot slipping off the pedals.
Drivers are told to ensure drivers are not too heavy, not limit ankle movement and be narrow enough to avoid accidentally depressing two pedals at once.
