Drivers face a crackdown on parking as police slam drivers over the "worst parking ever seen". UK tourists and holidaymakers in a popular tourist spot have been warned to expect "harsher" fines as 64 drivers parking ‘inappropriately’ in a Lake District valley were handed fines in a single afternoon.

Copeland police said officers were at Wastwater yesterday, Saturday September 21. In a social media post, they said: “It was some of the worst parking the officers have seen in the area and it’s a good job a fire engine or other large emergency vehicle didn’t need to get down to Wasdale Head.

“By all means come and enjoy the valley, but please consider others when you park your car. This road is a clearway and there should be absolutely no parking on it, this includes in passing places and on both sides of the road!

“And before you say it, no, the money from the tickets doesn’t pay for our Christmas party or contribute towards our wages in any way! We wish it did!” Cumbria Police said it had issued the "traffic offence reports" to drivers parked inappropriately alongside Wastwater on Saturday.

A force spokesperson said it was "some of the worst parking the officers had seen in the area" and it was a "good job" emergency services hadn't needed to access Wasdale Head. That section of road is a clearway and therefore no vehicles should be parked on it, the spokesperson added.

Drivers can be fined £70 for the higher band of parking infringement but this can be discounted to £35 if paid within 14 days. This penalty can be issued for parking in a restricted area in a car park, or in a permit bay without clearly displaying a valid permit, in a car park or area not designated for that class of vehicle, on yellow lines or in loading areas without loading.
