Drivers fear 'weeks of gridlock' when roadworks start in North Wales town
Residents are bracing for “gridlock” on a busy town centre road as more than two weeks of roadworks get underway. A section of the A547 Conway Road in Llandudno Junction is being resurfaced and most of the work will be done during the day.
Conwy Council said a convoy system will be in place through the 0.3-mile roadworks between the mini roundabout at Ferndale Road to the road’s junction with Penrhos Avenue. The work starts on Monday, November 18. Weather permitting, it's due to end on Wednesday, December 4.
For the most part, the council’s contractors will be working from 7.30am to 5.30pm to strip the existing surface, replace manholes and gullies, and lay a bond coating for the new surface. During these times, traffic must wait to be be escorted past the roadworks.

The new surface itself will be laid at nighttime on two dates. This work will take place from 6pm to 2am on Thursday and Friday, November 28-29. The local authority said side roads will be closed “briefly” during this work. But it warned: “There may be delays on the main road.”
Among the side roads affected will be one serving Llandudno Junction rail station. Another is Marl Drive, which residents complain is often congested. Sign up now for the latest news on the North Wales Live Whatsapp community
“This is going to go well,” said one local when the roadworks were announced online. “The Junction will be gridlocked for weeks.” Others forecasted a “nightmare” and questioned how public and school buses will cope.
Parking will be banned on affected sections while the work is carried out. However pedestrians access will be maintained. To prevent disruption to deliveries, businesses are asked top contact the council on erf@ conwy.gov.uk with days and times they’re expected. “Please give us as much notice as you can so we can try to make appropriate arrangements,” said the local authority.
“Resurfacing can be a noisy and dusty process, and we are sorry for the inconvenience this might cause. The new road surface will provide a smoother, quieter ride and will be a long lasting benefit to the community.”
