Drivers have been left confused over a one-word road sign which appears far eerier than expected.

Some who had never seen the sign before noted it was quite the strange marking, with the electric sign on the M11 causing quite a stir on Reddit. User Megalodon-5 posted to r/UKDriving on the social media platform and wrote: "Just seen this sign on the M11. What does it mean? Never seen it before."

Members of the public were quick to weigh in on what it means, and many of them were just as perplexed by the sighting. Now people know what the sign means saying they are "fine about" its use, though others are claiming the "end" sign is used far too frequently.

One user wrote: "There was some info such as advisory speed due to traffic or caution due to a warning of debris in the road. End means it's the end of that warning, but you may only come across the end if you've joined in-between, or they've forgotten to remove the end after the other ones have been removed."

Another added: "'END' of any restrictions, warnings etc that would have been on a previous matrix board. Smart motorways these might have been a variable speed limit; although that looks as though it could have been a period of roadworks, high winds/fog conditions, congestion etc."

But others took the chance to joke about what the sign could have meant, with one humorously replying: "It means you have completed 'driving in the UK'. And will be returned to the start." Another user joked: "End of the road."

The "End" sign spotted on the M11 means "End of Restriction". Any road laws in place temporarily in the preceding section of road are now lifted.
