Drivers who de-ice car on Tuesday and Wednesday face having to pay £500
Drivers who've de-iced their car this week face having to pay £500. Drivers could be forced into a £500 car repair after making a major de-icing mistake during the UK snow bomb this week, it has been warned by motoring experts and road whizzes.
According to specialists at Windscreen Wipers, pouring hot water directly onto the glass is a no-go. They said: “Using water of any temperature to de-ice windscreens is not advised.
“Hot water will cause the glass to expand, which can result in it cracking or even shattering, and cold water can freeze on top of existing ice and frost. Both methods can damage your windscreen, sometimes beyond repair. This is why using windscreen washer fluid that is designed to be used in freezing temperatures is important.

“The solution lowers the freezing point of the fluid so you can safely clear your windscreen while driving and not damage your wipers or the windscreen.” The RAC adds: "In the past, people used to boil water in the kettle and then throw it on the frozen car to quickly melt the car.
"However, this is a very dangerous thing to do! It will likely crack the glass – and even if it doesn’t, repeatedly doing it will weaken the glass. Known as ‘thermal shock’, this is a bad habit to get into." It adds: "Although it may be the quick option – spending an extra minute will be worth not having a large bill to replace your windscreen.
"However, using lukewarm water can be used in the absence of de-ice spray." These concentrated formulas are able to quickly clear ice and snow without it refreezing. If you get a high-quality spray, then it will not damage your vehicle’s paintwork, rubber, or plastics.
It can be used on all windows, windscreens, and lights.
