Drivers have been told to drive at a maximum 50mph if a light appears on their dashboard. Kwik Fit have spoken out to back up Scotty Kilmer, a viral content creator and US mechanic, who posts driving and motoring tips to his YouTube page.

“Today I’m going to show you what it means when this little symbol comes up on your dash," Scotty said. “It’s supposed to be a picture of a squashed tyre with an exclamation point in the middle warning you that your tyre pressure is low.

“So go get a tyre pressure gauge and check all the tyres. In this case, it’s a right rear tyre, it only has 22psi and the others have 34psi. In this case, it’s got a roofing nail in it that needs fixing.” Scotty added: “But if all your tyres are full of air it means the warning system is broken. It could be that the battery is worn out.

“Each wheel has a battery in the sensor. It could be the main unit is bad. It costs a lot of money to fix them generally. So if that’s the case, heck, buy a gauge for dic bucks and check them yourself.” Tyres will let you drive far enough to reach assistance, but you should be aware that you shouldn't drive faster than 50mph for more than 50 miles as this can make the tyres unsafe.

Kwik Fit says: "The speed limit can even be lower on some models, so be sure before you get back to driving." Replying to Scotty, a driver said: "Our 2013 Highlander had a warning light but kept coming on every time the temperature made a white swing.

"We switched from the dealer servicing our vehicles to a local mechanic. We asked him why and for no charge he checked each wheel sensor band found two were defective. It cost us only $4" A second said: "I got a gauge. Works like a charm. I was told last time that I got new tires that new tpms was gonna cost over $300.

"Haven't had tpms in almost 3 years. I chuckled and said I was good."
