Life-threatening flash flooding overtook St Louis overnight into July 26 after more than half a foot of rain fell on parts of Missouri, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Local authorities warned residents to stay home as water levels rose, leaving cars and motorists stranded.
Video streamed live by the Missouri Department of Transportation shows vehicles driving along a rain-covered Route 141 on Tuesday morning.
As of early Tuesday, St Louis had measured 7.02 inches of rain in five hours, smashing the previous record daily rainfall.
