New DVLA rules will impact all classic car owners with major changes, it has been warned. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) are confident a series of new DVLA rules set to simplify registration for historic vehicle owners will go ahead, they say.

They say they were “optimistic” after a Call for Evidence into updating DVLA processes was held over the summer. Speaking to Classic Car Weekly, FBHVC’s DVLA liaison Ian Edmunds said: “We are very optimistic that the DVLA has understood our concerns and that we will have something that is a lot better than it is now in due course.

“I’m not going to say that it will be perfect or that it will give us everything that we’ve asked for but I am very positive about the future.” They have also demanded an "acknowledgement" that the use of new modern components was likely to be unavoidable when updating classic vehicles.

It comes after a call for evidence under the then-Conservative Party government back in May. It said: "Classic car industry and driving enthusiasts can help shape future policy on how to protect motoring icons and make them fit for the modern age.

"Registering a James Bond style Aston Martin DB5 after it’s been restored or retrofitting an electric motor to the iconic DMC DeLorean could become easier, supporting jobs in the £18 billion classic car industry." The consultation "follows the Plan for Drivers and the biggest ever £8.3 billion investment to resurface local roads across England, as government continues to back drivers," the Tories said.

Then-Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, said: "The way we restore and protect classic cars has not kept up with the times and evolving technologies, which is why we are calling for industry and enthusiasts to have their say on how to best protect these British classics for decades to come.

"Alongside our record £8.3 billion increase to resurface local roads and the 30-point Plan for Drivers, today’s call for evidence is the latest part of the government’s plan to back drivers, support skilled jobs, and grow the economy."
