Drivers who spend £8 before the next UK snow storm can save themselves a £2,500 fine. Ed Colley, Head of Brand and Marketing at the window repair and replacement service Autoglass, recommended that drivers spray rain repellent on their windscreen the night before temperatures drop.

He said: "The best bet for clearing the frost is to use a proper ice scraper, which can remove the ice efficiently without scratching the glass. For those who are really prepared, applying a rain repellent to your windscreen the night before will limit the water sitting on the glass and can make de-icing your windscreen much easier and quicker."

He warned: "Drivers should avoid the temptation to remove the ice by pouring boiling water over the windscreen, as the sudden change in temperature can cause the glass to expand and cause small chips to expand into bigger cracks.

"Using sharp objects like credit cards to clear the ice is also likely to scratch the glass while turning on the car engine and leaving it to clear the ice can take time and is not the most environmentally friendly option."

Driving with a obstructed windscreen means drivers could face £2,500 fines if an obscured view of the road led to a case of dangerous driving. Halfords Rain-X Rain Repellent 200ml costs £8 and it states: "Be sure to clean and dry the surfaces before treating. Apply in temperatures above 4°C. Apply the Rain‑X Rain Repellent to a dry cloth, or spray directly onto the glass surface. Wipe onto exterior glass using a firm, circular and overlapping motion.

"Allow the product to dry; a slight haze may appear. Reapply the Rain‑X Rain Repellent to ensure complete and uniform coverage. Remove the final haze with a dry cloth or by sprinkling water onto the haze and wiping with a paper towel. Avoid using the Rain‑X Rain Repellent on plastic shower doors, glass shower doors with etching or frosting, plexiglass and fibre glass, plastic surfaces, including motorcycle windshields, ATVs and solar panels.

"We recommend the Rain-X Plastic Water Repellent for use on any plastics, including motorcycle and boat windscreens. Always use windscreen wipers as necessary."
