Drivers urged to avoid 'illegal' defrosting trend despite it being 'tempting'
Drivers have been warned over a rise in car thefts over the Christmas period with millions at risk. Vehicle recovery experts Tracker revealed that between November 2023 and January 2024 it marked peak season for vehicle thefts linked to cold weather.
Criminals took advantage of drivers leaving cars unattended while defrosting, they warned. Clive Wain, Head of Police Liaison at Tracker, said: "Whilst it can be very tempting to leave your car running on these cold and dark mornings, the wider risk of theft if just too strong.
"Although it isn't always the nicest option, staying with your vehicle in frosty conditions can help to prevent theft, invalid insurance, fines and penalty points. Wrap up warm and stay with your car whilst you are defrosting the windows, whether it is on your driveway or parked in the road."

December and January are peak months for car crime, as this is when we typically experience harsh frosty mornings, and drivers often leave cars unattended whilst de-icing, which presents itself as a prime opportunity for criminal gangs.
Leaving an engine running on a public road violates regulations 98 and 107 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as well as rule 123 of the Highway Code. December is also a time when we’re likely to store expensive items, such as Christmas presents, in our cars, which can also leave you more vulnerable to car theft. Tracker warned when heading out for your last minute Christmas shopping or to hit those January sales, be sure to park in a busy, well-lit area or secure car park if possible.
Never leave your car doors or windows unlocked and lock your vehicle when you are next to it to prevent thieves. And as tempting as it is to leave your engine running to heat up your frosty car and de-ice, try and avoid this as much as possible as it makes you a prime target - even if its parked on your own drive or street.
