Six in 10 drivers are unaware of how to maintain their car, according to shock new research. Tim Rodie, an automotive expert at the used vehicle retailer Motorpoint, warned drivers looking to cut down on the cost of running a car should make routine maintenance their business.

He explained: "It’s surprising to learn that so many motorists lack confidence when it comes to completing basic car maintenance tasks and don’t feel that it’s their responsibility to know how to make these checks themselves at home. Ultimately, as road users we all have a responsibility to keep on top of our car maintenance and make sure that our vehicles are safe and roadworthy."

Tim also urged all drivers to check their vehicle's oil level at least once per month, topping it up if necessary. According to the latest 2024 data from the RAC, the average cost to carry out an oil change is £90.65.

This includes removing the old oil, replacing the oil filter and filling it up with new fluid by a mobile mechanic. This is the average price for an oil change in the UK, which means the price you pay may differ based on the age, make and model of your vehicle.

He continued: "Legally, all cars must have a minimum of 1.6mm thread across the central 75% of any tyre surface. While tyres will typically be checked when you get your car serviced, motorists are responsible for checking they have a safe amount of tread.

"The easiest way to do this quickly at home is to take a 20p piece and insert it into the grooves on each of your tyres - if you can’t see the outer band on the coin then you’re above the legal limit and are safe to drive." He added: "It is easily overlooked, but engine oil is vital to minimise friction and keep your vehicle running smoothly.

"Motor oil keeps the inner workings of your car clean and reduces corrosion which can help your car stay in great shape for longer. Be sure to check your oil once a month or before any long journeys as a part of your car maintenance checklist."
